Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
