During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
