France to begin stopping migrant vessels in Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
