Cyclone Melissa Gains Power While Moves In the Direction of Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa is projected to become a uncommon highest-level cyclone as it veers towards Jamaica, delivering life-threatening sudden floods and mudslides.
The hurricane, which had wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to hit the coast by early next week, according to hurricane specialists.
Advisories of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been released as Melissa brings up to thirty inches of rain and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been advised.
This hurricane is the 13th named storm in the current Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.
Highest-Level Storm Danger
A highest-level hurricane is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.
While Melissa is expected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 storm before reaching Jamaica, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it impacts the nation.

With storm-force gusts and precipitation predicted to begin long before it moves across the island's interior - possibly even the national capital - alerts indicate that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".
"A multi-day period of harmful winds and intense precipitation have begun and will cause severe and deadly sudden floods and numerous rock slides," urged weather authorities.
The country's head of government Andrew Holness commented: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: you should be concerned.
"Yet the best way to manage nervousness and any nervousness and worry is to remain prepared."
Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to stock up on basic necessities.
